Obituary

Mr. Alan Smith, age 62, beloved husband of Janel Ashley Smith of Glenwood, passed away on Friday evening, December 1, 2023 at Augusta University Medical Center in Augusta, Georgia.

Born in Milledgeville, he was the eldest of four children born to Winford and Martha Sue Teal Smith of Soperton.  Since 1972, the family has made Soperton their home.  Alan was a graduate of Treutlen County High School, Class of 1979 where he lettered in Baseball and was selected as an All America High School All Star Center Fielder.  After high school, he attended South Georgia College.  Growing up, Alan was a member of the Boy Scouts of America, Troop No. 56 in Soperton where he earned his Eagle Scout status.

Alan followed in his father's foot steps working for GA Power as a Lineman and Troubleman, primarily in Treutlen and Toombs Counties, from where he retired after thirty eight years in 2021.  During high school and after retirement, Alan worked with the Brinson family on the Brinson Farm in the Zaidee Community.

Alan enjoyed; of course, baseball, outside cooking and his "Thursday Night Council Sessions".  He possessed a caring heart for others, would give freely to those in need and provided anonymously to many that never knew of his generosity and loving and kind spirit.

He is a member at Rock Springs Baptist Church and had attended the Anchor of Hope in Soperton.

Alan is preceded in death by his father and mother in law, Eugene Kennon Ashley and Etta Ashley, who he affectionately referred to as "Gmaw".

He leaves behind: his wife, Janel Ashley Smith, Glenwood, GA, children, Amanda Nichole "Nicki" Galanti (Jeremy), Sharpsburg, GA, USAF Senior Airman William Lucas "Luke" Smith, currently stationed at Langley Air Force Base, Hampton, VA, Jennifer Woodall (James), Gray, GA, Bradley, Cravey (Jennifer), Severance CO, Heather Cravey, Helena, GA, Ashley Walden (Trey), Helena, GA, his siblings, Holly Suzanne Willis (Tracy), Gainesville, GA, John Ashley Smith (Renee), Statesboro, GA, Jennifer Elizabeth Dietzel (Chris), Nesbit, MS, thirteen grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
