Obituary

Mrs. Annie Jo Mathis, age 77, beloved wife of the late Hugh Curtis Mathis Sr., of Adrian passed away on Saturday morning, October 23, 2021 at their home.

Born in Swainsboro, she was the third of four children born to the late Franklin and Lucille Gentry Hutcheson.  She grew up in Swainsboro, spending many summers at the city pool.  In 1962 she married Johnson County native, Hugh Curtis Mathis, Sr.  In the 1970s she worked as a Machine Operator at the Wrightsville clothing factory.  She worked along her husband's side as a brick mason for many years; providing lunches and refreshments.  They lived in Rincon and Uvalda before settling in Adrian in the late 1990s.

She had attended the First Baptist Church of Adrian and was a fan of Pop Tarts, Nutty Buddys, Peanut Butter Cups and Diet Dr. Pepper.   She loved her dogs and tending to the wild birds that made her trees their home.

Her parents and husband preceded her in death.

Mrs. Mathis leaves behind her children, Terri Lynn Saenz, Floresville, TX, William Craig "Bill" Mathis (Carol), Bloomingdale, GA, Darlene McDaniel, Adrian, GA, Hugh Curtis Mathis Jr. (Sylvia), Cedar Crossing, GA, two brothers, Franklin Hutcheson Jr. (Frances), Savannah, GA, Robert "JimBo" Hutcheson (Donna), Kite, GA, a sister, Nanette Radford, Adrian, GA, fourteen grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 pm on Friday, October 29, 2021 in the Williams Chapel of Sammons Funeral Home with Dr. Curt Lysaker of Shady Grove Baptist Church officiating.

Mrs. Mathis will be laid to rest beside her husband on their property in Johnson County.

Her family will receive friends on Friday, at the funeral home, from 11:00 am until the hour of service or friends and family may call at the home of her daughter in Adrian.
