Mrs. Betty Ruth Horton Palmer, age 91, beloved wife of the late Robert Palmer of Soperton passed away on Sunday evening, December 15, 2024 at the Treutlen County Health and Rehabilitation Center in Soperton.
She was a lifelong resident of Soperton and was the only daughter and last living of two children born to the late Willie B. Horton and Vettie Manning Horton. She was a 1949 graduate of Soperton High School where she was the class secretary and continued to serve in that capacity for the ensuing seventy five years, through their most recent class reunion. After high school, she attended South Georgia College where she studied Business, in preparation for a job that she didn't know she would move into. In the early 1950s she applied and was hired for a position with Gillis Brother's Timber. She worked directly for Senator Hugh Gillis Sr. with Gillis Bros. Timber, Soperton Naval Stores and eventually Gillis Ag and Timber, as his personal assistant, for over forty years until retiring in the 1990s. While working with the Gillis family, she was also a Tax Preparer for individuals of Treutlen County, during tax season.
Miss Betty Ruth was a member of the Women's Auxiliary of the American Legion, the Order of the Eastern Star, Soperton Chapter and was involved in many community activities and events.
She enjoyed telling stories and sharing the history of Treutlen County, collecting and sharing cookbooks and recipes, a good game of Canasta, baking cakes (especially her coveted ten layer chocolate) and cross stitch needle work.
Miss Betty Ruth was a member of Soperton First Baptist Church and had attended Red Bluff Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of sixty three years, Robert Palmer and her brother, Roy Horton.
She leaves behind, her son and his wife, Scotty and Janet Palmer, Lavonia, Georgia, a host of dear beloved friends and special caregivers, Sharon McCloud, Eunice Gillis and Virginia Austin.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, December 17, 2024 in the Williams Chapel of Sammons Funeral Home with Pastor Cricket Green officiating.
Mrs. Palmer will be laid to rest beside her husband in Westview Cemetery in Soperton.
Her family will receive friends on Tuesday at the funeral home from 1:00 o'clock pm until the hour of service.
Serving as pallbearers will be: Gary Walden, Todd Crosby, Jason Page, Randy Dorsey, Luke Dorsey, Danny Johnson and John Johnson.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are asked to be made in her memory to the charity of your choice.
