Obituary

Mr. Charles Herbert "Chuck" Sumner, III, age 55, of Statesboro died Saturday, April 1, 2017.

Mr. Sumner was born in Soperton and was preceded in death by his father, Charles Herbert Sumner, Jr.  He was a 1980 graduate of Treutlen High School and a 1984 graduate of the University of Georgia.  After a successful sales career in agricultural economics, he found his true calling in coaching and teaching.  He began his career in education in 1989 at David Emanuel Academy, Stillmore, and spent the next twenty-seven years as a teacher and coach in the GISA.  His last nine years were spent at Pinewood Christian Academy in Belleville, GA.  He was a member of Soperton United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his mother, Shirley Jones Sumner of Soperton; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Beth and Don Huskins of Eatonton and Patti and Scott Heaton of Soperton; aunt and uncle, Mary Alice and Jim Harley of Soperton; and several cousins.

Services will be conducted in the Soperton United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 4, with Reverend John Drake, Sheriff Tommy Corbin, and Coach Keith Wasson officiating.  Burial will be in Westview Cemetery with Sammons Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers will be Garrett Blaxton, Mark Bowers, Tommy Corbin, Todd Frizzelle, Barron Gillis, Mitch Johnson, John Koon, and Keith Wasson.

The honorary escort will include Pinewood Christian Academy Coaching Staff, Golf Team, and Football Team.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 6—8 p.m. and may be reached at the family residence.
