Mr. Daniel Jay "D.J." Brantley, age 42 of Mt. Vernon passed away on Thursday, May 1, 2025 at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah.
Born in Vidalia, he was the eldest of four children. He grew up in Mt. Vernon where he attended school. In the early 2000s, he and his mother moved to the Troups Tomb area of Treutlen County where they remained until 2015. They then returned to Mt. Vernon. "D. J." was a heavy equipment and diesel mechanic that had worked primarily in the Logging Industry for over twenty years. He had worked with MLK Weeks Logging and was presently working with Bob Jones Logging. He was content and felt at home with a cap on his head and grease under his finger nails.
"D. J." enjoyed fishing, camping at the river, throwing horseshoes with his family and friends and working on folk's cars that needed help. He would give the shirt off of his back, even if it was greasy.
He is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, J. A. Maddox and Udell Farmer Maddox and his paternal grandparents, John Carl Poole and Nancy Hullender Poole.
"D. J." leaves behind his parents, Judy Maddox of Mt. Vernon, GA and John Lewis "Tomnot" Poole, (Cathy Williamson Poole) of Mt. Vernon, GA. He also leaves a son, Jackson Poole, Glenwood, GA, siblings, Carla and husband, Little Man Young, Lothair, GA, Niki Jackson, Vidalia, GA, John Lewis Poole II, Mt. Vernon, GA, Dylan Thigpen (Abby), Grey's Landing, Toombs County, GA, MacKenzie Thigpen, Glenwood, GA, his bonus parents, Uncle Ray and Aunt Patricia Edge, Mt. Vernon, GA, numerous nieces and nephews and one great niece.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Friday, May 9, 2025 in the Williams Chapel of Sammons Funeral Home with Reverend Troy Maddox officiating.
"D. J." will be laid to rest in the Bazel – Connell Family Cemetery in the Bear Creek Community of Montgomery County.
Serving as pallbearers will be: Dusty Edge, Dylan Thigpen, Cody Rogers, Layton Jones, Dawson Jones and Dave Fountain.
Honorary pallbearers will be: Ray Edge, Milton Fountain, Bob Jones and Chad Coleman.
His family will receive friends on Thursday, at Sammons Funeral Home, from 6:00 – 8:00 o'clock p. m. Family and friends will be gathering at the home of Ray and Trisha Edge of Mt. Vernon.
