Orianna Community
Mrs. Doris Elaine Stephens, age 91, beloved wife of the late Jack Stephens of the Orianna Community passed away on Thursday afternoon, June 16, 2022 at the Dream Catcher Senior Care Community in Jackson, Georgia.
Born in Laurens County, she was the last living of six children born to the late Walter Lee Avery and Lillie Mae Sanders Avery. During her early childhood, the family lived in Thomaston as her mother worked in the Cotton Mill and her father worked as a Tradesman, picking up any and all odd jobs; because he could do anything. They returned to Treutlen County where Elaine attended and graduated from Soperton High School. After high school she worked at J. P. Stevens where she met her future husband, Wrightsville native, Raymond Jack Stephens. They married in 1951 before he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. The newlyweds lived on base at Camp LeJeune until her husband was discharged and they returned home settling on land purchased from family in the Orianna Community. Upon returning to Treutlen County, Mrs. Stephens worked at J. P. Stevens and Forstmans as a Planner in the Preparation Department, for approximately forty three years, until retiring in the mid 1990s. The Orianna Community has remained their home.
Mrs. Stephens enjoyed yardwork, gardening, traveling and maintaining written communication (letters) between herself and the wives of fellow USMC soldiers met and befriended while at Camp LeJeune.
She was a member of Poplar Springs Methodist Church, Adrian, GA.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of sixty one years, Jack Stephens and siblings: infant brother Vernon Avery, Remus Avery, Franklin Avery, Catherine Durden and Lawana Crafton.
Mrs. Stephens leaves behind: her children, Calvin Stephens (Kathy), Adrian, GA, Michael Stephens (Penny), Alamo, GA, Kim Stephens (Brenda), Lyons, GA, Tammy Humphreys (Paul), Springfield, VA, Karen Strevel (Jacob), McDonough, GA, fourteen grandchildren, Christopher Joe Stephens, Michael Keith Stephens, Devon Humphreys, Brandon Humphreys, Aubrie Humphries, Rhianna Humphreys,
Ethan Strevel, Jackson Strevel, Jessica Warren, Martin Stephens, Cheney Stephens, Jake Upchurch, Courtney Upchurch, Maggie Llewelyn, eighteen great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 am on Tuesday, June 21, 2022 in the Williams Chapel of Sammons Funeral Home with Reverend Troy Mattox and Reverend Archie Norman officiating.
Mrs. Stephens will be laid to rest beside her husband in Poplar Springs Methodist Church Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers will be: Christopher Joe Stephens, Martin Stephens, Kim Stephens, Ethan Strevel, Michael Keith Stephens and Jake Upchurch.
Her family will receive friends on Monday from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at the funeral home.
