Mr. Eugene "Gene" C. Stewart, age 84 of Ailey passed away on Tuesday morning, September 1, 2020 at Community Hospice in Vidalia, Georgia.
A native and longtime resident of Treutlen County, he was the only son and one of four children born to the late Harvard and Bertha Hutcheson Stewart. He and his sisters grew up on the homeplace in Treutlen County and attended school in Treutlen County. After high school, Gene enlisted and served in the United States Navy. Upon being discharged he came home and worked as a mail carrier in Treutlen County for a short time before reenlisting for a second tour of duty. At the time of his second honorable discharge, he worked with Seaboard Coastline until joining GA Power where he worked as an Instrument Control Technician at Plant Hatch, until retiring in 2003. Gene was the epitome of a Southern Gentleman. He was unselfish, kind, gentle, humble, softspoken and felt the calling to help those in emotional and physical need.
He was a lifelong member of Zaidee Advent Christian Church and was an ordained Advent Christian minister.
A farmer at heart, he enjoyed traveling and helping others.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by former wives, Sylvia West Stewart, Jane Warnock Stewart, his sons, Brian Stewart, sisters, Billie Knight, Sarah Cross and two nephews, Frankie Hutcheson and Randy Cross.
Gene leaves behind, his last living sister, Frances Stewart Hutcheson (Frank), Savannah, GA, a former wife, Christine Sumner, step sons, Lance Link, Clint Jones, nieces, Pam DeLeves (Paul), Savannah, GA, Patty Cross, Savannah, GA, Kim Cleek (Bill), Guyton, GA, Fran Jones, Savannah, GA, a nephew, Freddie Hutcheson, Savannah, GA, four great nieces, Gentry, Christy, Halie and Lucy Hutcheson and Shana Coleman, a great nephew, Hank Hutcheson and four great great nephews.
Gene will be laid to rest, privately, near his homeplace, with his parents in the Hutcheson Cemetery in Treutlen County.

Gene's family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to Chip and Sharon Killingsworth of Ailey for their years of caring and attention to Gene; and to the Zaidee Advent Christian Church family for the love shown to Gene through his lifetime of affiliation with this his home church.
