Obituary

Mrs. Evie Lee Mathis, age 71, beloved wife of Jim Mathis of Lyons, Georgia passed away on Tuesday afternoon, August 24, 2021 at Doctor's Hospital in Augusta.

Born in Laurens County, she was the second youngest of eleven children born to the late Ottis and Mozell Johnson Townsend.  She grew up in Dublin and attended East Laurens High School.  Evie had worked as a Machine Operator at the Oxford Shirt Factory in Dublin and J. P. Forstmann Manufacturing before opening and running, with her sister Mavis, Teddy Land Daycare in East Dublin.  She later worked at Mohawk Manufacturing in Dublin before she and her husband started a home cleaning service.

Evie enjoyed needle work; especially embroidery, time spent with her family, listening to gospel music and working in her yard.

She was a former member at the Dublin Church of God and was presently attending New Beginning Church of God in Lyons.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by husbands, Charles R. Mimbs, R. D. Thompson, her son, Shane Mimbs, step son, Robert D. Mathis and siblings, Lottie Faye Cantrell, Walter Townsend, Osbert Townsend and James A. Townsend.

Evie leaves behind her husband, Jim Mathis, Lyons, GA, her daughter, Crystal Smith (Dennis), Lyons, GA, step son, Christopher Anthony Mathis, Claxton, GA, siblings, Shelly Reynolds Brown (Wallace), Lafayette, GA, Foy Townsend (Dean), Minter, GA, Roy Townsend (Patsy), East Dublin, GA, Bobby Townsend Sr. (Sue), Minter, GA, Charlie Townsend (Charlotte), East Dublin, GA, Mavis Townsend, East Dublin, GA, grandchildren, Paris Mimbs Moseley, Meredith Jones, Brittany Jones, Christian Ansley, Charlotte Mathis and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am on Monday, August 30, 2021 at the Dublin Church of God with Pastor Steve Hardeman and Pastor Mike Smith officiating.

Evie will be laid to rest in Northview Cemetery in Dublin.

Serving as pallbearers will be: Tommy Williams, Jason Moseley, Dennis Smith, Wesley Duncan, Pat Stevens and Chris Mathis.

Her family will receive friends on Monday, at the church, from 10:00 am until the hour of service or on Saturday at the home of her daughter from 5:00 – 7:00 pm..
