Mrs. Fannie Mae Young Stewart, age 91, beloved wife of the late William E. "Gene" Stewart of the Minter Community, passed away on Friday morning, February 9, 2024 at Fairview Park Hospital in Dublin.
Born in Laurens County, she was one of six children born to the late Henry Daniel Young and Leitha Elizabeth Fulford Young. She grew up in Minter and was a graduate of Wilkes High School. After high school, she worked at Soperton Manufacturing where she met her future husband. She and Mr. Gene would marry on November 6, 1954. He went on to work with J. P. Stevens while Mrs. Stewart remained at Soperton Manufacturing which would later become Woolrich Manufacturing. She retired in the mid 1980's after approximately thirty years.
She and Mr. Stewart were longtime members of the Minter Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir.
Mrs. Stewart enjoyed working jigsaw puzzles, word searches, studying her Bible, reading Christian books and time spent with her neighbors preserving vegetables; especially her coveted sweet corn.
In addition to her husband of sixty two years, and her parents, she is preceded in death by: siblings, Preston Young, Zilmon Young, Cessum Young and Paul Young.
Mrs. Stewart leaves behind, her daughter, Debra "Debbie" Stewart Smith (David), Dublin, GA, her grandson, Daniel Smith, Dublin, GA, her only living sibling, Nell Maddox, Milledgeville, GA, a special niece, Dr. Alpha Jeanelle Watson, Minter, GA, sisters in law, Maggie Mimbs Young, Virginia "Ginger" Hester Young, both of Minter, GA, a brother in law, Charles Stewart (Cathy), Highland, IL and additional nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, February 13, 2024 from the graveside in Minter Cemetery with Reverend Milton Thomas and Reverend James Allen officiating. Mrs. Stewart will be laid to rest beside her husband.
Her family will receive friends on Monday, at Sammons Funeral Home, from 6:00 – 8:00 o'clock p.m.
