Mr. Avery passed away on Sunday, November 22, 2015.
Mr. Hugh E. Avery, Sr., age 88, of Soperton died Sunday, November 22, 2015.
Mr. Avery was born in Wheeler County and was preceded in death by his parents, E. L. Avery, Sr., and Lucille Scarborough Avery. He lived in Ailey and Soperton before moving to Augusta where he spent most of his adult life before retiring to Soperton in 1992. He was a graduate of Brewton Parker College and a member of the American Legion Post 59. He was a United States Army Air Corps veteran having served during the Berlin Airlift Crisis. He was a farmer and was a construction superintendent for J. C. Stockton and Son, Augusta. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Soperton, where he served as deacon, and member and former Sunday school teacher of the R. A. Perry Sunday School Class. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, hunting, and fishing. He also enjoyed spending time with family and serving others.
Survivors include his wife of sixty-four years, Doris Claxton Avery; sons, Hugh E. Avery, Jr. and his wife, Elaine, and Edwin Avery and his wife, Cindi, all of Dublin; granddaughter, Blakely Avery Stephenson and her husband, Chance, of Eufaula, AL; great-grandson, Tucker Stephenson of Eufaula, AL; sisters, Lynette Drew of Demorest and Undine Fortner of Vidalia; brother, E. L. Avery, Jr. of Vidalia; special caregivers, Runell Smith and Kathey Hill; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held in the Chapel of Sammons Funeral Home, Soperton, at 11 a. m. Tuesday, November 24, with the Reverend George Grimes officiating. Burial was in Westview Cemetery, Soperton.
Pallbearers were Richard Ware, David Roberts, Darin Keen, Wayne Hooks, Fred Barber, and Donnie Cammack.
Members of the R. A. Perry Sunday School Class served as honorary pallbearers.
