In the early evening hours on Wednesday, January 29, 2020, Mr. J. Cessum Young of the Minter Community passed away at the age of 92. His family had been by his side since his recent admission to Fairview Park Hospital in Dublin. Born on October 7, 1927 in Laurens County, Mr. Young was one of six children born to the late Henry Daniel and Leitha Fulford Young. In 1954 while visiting Fuller's Jewelry Store in Soperton he met his future wife; Treutlen County native, Maggie Mimbs. On January 22, 1955 they married and Mr. Young took his new bride home to Laurens County. He was the Owner and Operator of Young's Grocery in Minter before selling to his brother, Paul. After selling the store he pursued his love of and passion for farming; growing cotton, corn, soy beans and peanuts for many years until retiring in 1986.
Mr. Cessum, as he had come to be known, was a member of Blackville Church of God.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers, D. Preston Young and Zilmon Young.
Mr. Cessum leaves behind his beloved wife of 65 years, Maggie M. Young, their three sons, Dan and Teresa Young, Fred and Susan Young, Carneage and Malehia Young, a brother, Paul and Virginia Young, two sisters, Fannie Mae Stewart, Nell Maddox of Milledgeville, Georgia, grandchildren, Ashley, Rebecca, Matthew and Hannah, Clay and Chris, Kayla (Zach) and Kyle (Chelsea) and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 o'clock pm on Saturday, February 1, 2020 at the Blackville Church of God with Reverend Gordon Statum, Reverend Danny May and Reverend Kip Boswell officiating.
Mr. Young will be laid to rest in the family section of Minter Cemetery.
Serving as active pallbearers will be grandsons: Matthew Young, Clay Young, Chris Young and Kyle Aaron. Also serving will be Gary Dickens and Carlton Ely.
His family will receive friends on Friday from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at the church.
