Mr. James D. "J.D." Selph, age 79, beloved husband of Judy Lawrence Selph of Mt. Vernon, passed away on Sunday morning, February 11, 2024 at Community Hospice in Vidalia.

Born in Hazlehurst, Georgia, he was the second of five children born to the late William Herman Selph and Vesper Safronia Owens Selph.  He grew up and attended school in Hazlehurst.  Upon starting his family he lived in Mt. Vernon and the Bear Creek Community.   In the mid 1970s he came to Soperton and began a long career in the Textile Industry.  He worked in several mills before joining GFF in Soperton from where he retired as a Shift Manager, with over thirty years working in the industry.  While at GFF, he met fellow employee, Judy Lawrence, that would become his wife.  They married in 1985 and settled in Mt. Vernon in the early 1990s.  Before retiring, he attended Swainsboro Technical College and earned a degree as a Commercial Electrician.  He worked for several years with Joel Manning maintaining Piglet Supermarkets in the area

Mr. "J.D." enjoyed working with his tractors, fishing, raising goats with Judy and any activity that kept him out doors.

As a child, he attended the Bridgeford Church of God in Hazlehurst as well as Bear Creek Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon.  He was presently a member at the Mt. Vernon Church of God in Mt. Vernon.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers, Stanley Selph and his wife, Verdine; Richard Selph and a son, Lance Hackle of Soperton, GA.

Mr. Selph leaves behind: his wife of thirty nine years, Judy Lawrence Selph, Mt. Vernon, GA, children, Regina ONeal, Helena, GA, Andy Selph, Helena, GA, Kurt Selph, Valdosta, GA, Jason Selph (Brooke), Cedar Crossing, GA, a daughter in law, Rena Hackle, Soperton, GA, two siblings, Carolyn Creamer (Johnny) and Jimmy Selph, all of Hazlehurst, GA, grandchildren, Justin ONeal, Michael Selph, Dawson Selph, R.L. Selph, Parker Selph, Chelsea Selph, Eli Brock, Brailey Selph, Ashley Meeks, great grandchildren, Sophie, Seylor, Jensen, Laylon, Abbi, numerous nieces and nephews as well as his cherished canine companion, Chloe.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, February 14, 2024 at the Mt. Vernon Church of God with Reverend Milton Thomas and Pastor Rodney Gibbs officiating.

Mr. Selph will be laid to rest at Westview Cemetery in Soperton.  He will be escorted to his final place of rest by the Sons of Smoke and the Imago Dei Motorcycle Ministry.

Serving as pallbearers will be: R.L. Selph, Dawson Selph, Parker Selph, Heath Selph, William Sikes and Byron Braddy.

His family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at Sammons Funeral Home or friends and family may call at the residence.
