Mr. James R. "J. R." Woods, age 92, of Adrian died July 20, 2017.

Mr. Woods was a lifelong resident of Emanuel County and was preceded in death by his parents, Everett Lee and Sudie Sumner Woods, and daughter, Linda Futrill.  He was a US Army veteran of World War II, and was retired from Pineland Telephone Company, Metter, after thirty-seven years of service. He was a deputy with Emanuel County Sheriff's Department and was a member of Poplar Springs United Methodist Church, Adrian.

Survivors include his wife of seventy years, Dorothy Horton Woods; son-in-law, Gary Futrill of Adrian; grandchildren, Melinda (Cody) Hall of Adrian, John (Peggy) Futrill of Columbia SC, and Amy (Shawn) Knight of Jackson; great-grandchildren, Mercedes (Kaleb) Josey, Rhett (Karina) Mixon, Heaven Mixon, Serenity Runyon, Gage Futrill, Malina McKinzie, Mason Knight, and Karl Knight.

Funeral services will be held in Poplar Springs United Methodist Church at 2 o'clock Sunday, July 23, with Reverend Mark Hardin officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery with Sammons Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

A visitation will be held at the church one hour before the funeral services on Sunday.
