Mr. James R. "Doc" Powell, age 72, of Mt. Vernon passed away on Friday evening February 17, 2023 at Community Hospice in Vidalia.
Born in Vidalia, he was one of eleven children born to the late James Otis Powell and Daisy Weeks Powell. Mr. Powell grew up in Glenwood and had worked at the H.V. & T.G. Thompson Lumber Company from 1972 until it's closing in the late 1980s. He worked for many years in the Forestry Management Industry; with the Pollette and Thompson logging families. He worked as a logger, dozer operator, planted trees, built ponds and cleared tracts of land, until retiring in 2017. He had been a resident of the Bear Creek Community for over fifty years.
Mr. Powell enjoyed hog hunting, listening to dogs run, time spent with his grandchildren and the Atlanta Braves.
He had been a longtime member of the Bear Creek Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Vonnell "Tinsy" O'Conner Powell and siblings, Neal, Lloyd, Ralph, Dewey, Eddie, Homer "Dutchman", Hollis and Zora.
Mr. Powell leaves behind his children, Anthony Powell (Candace), Mt. Vernon, GA, Joni Sanders (Josh), Mt. Vernon, GA, a brother, Elmo Powell (Debbie), Mt. Vernon, GA, Susie Carey (Larry), Mt. Vernon, GA, three grandchildren, James Landon Powell, Hudson Sanders, Emma Grace Sanders and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am on Monday, February 20, 2023 in the Williams Chapel of Sammons Funeral Home with Pastor Owen Waters officiating.
Mr. Powell will be laid to rest beside his wife in the Cooper Cemetery, Mt. Vernon, GA.
His family will receive friends on Sunday from 4:00 – 6:00 pm at the funeral home or friends and family may call at the home of his daughter.
Serving as pallbearers will be: Shane Powell, Sean Powell, Shad Powell, Michael Powell, Jerry Neal, Bobby O'Conner and Jack O'Conner.
