Mr. Larry D. Thompson, age 80 of Ailey passed away on Monday afternoon, February 13, 2023 while being cared for by Community Hospice in Vidalia, Georgia.

A native and lifelong resident of Montgomery County, he was the eldest of two sons born to the late James Wilson "J. W." Thompson Jr. and LaVera Winge Thompson.  Mr. Thompson graduated from Montgomery High School before attending ABAC and the University of Georgia, from where he graduated with his Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture.   While a student at UGA, he met, Special Education major, Myra Freeman, whom he would wed in 1966.  Upon her graduation she taught for a short time in Dekalb County before marrying Mr. Thompson and settling in Montgomery County.  After moving to Ailey she joined the Vidalia School System were she taught Special Education before retiring with a total of thirty years,  teaching and mentoring.  Mr. Thompson was a life long Farmer and tiller of the earth.  In addition to his growing vegetables and livestock, he owned and ran Thompson Farms Produce in Vidalia for many years.

An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing and in 2005 he was recognized as the "Georgia Bass Angler of the Year", for a fourteen pound bass that he caught in his farm pond.  When not outside, he might be found following the Georgia Bulldogs or the Atlanta Braves.

Mr. Thompson and his wife had been active at Ailey and Oak Grove Baptist Churches.  Most recently he has attended Bear Creek Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of thirty four years, Myra Freeman Thompson.

Mr. Thompson leaves behind his daughter, Nancy Thompson Moseley, Orland Community, Soperton, GA special friend and caregiver, Ruby Piatchek, Ailey, GA, his brother, Terrell Paulk Thompson (Barbara), Mesa, AZ, two grandsons, (who affectionately called him "Pepaw") Christopher Moseley, Orland Community, Soperton, GA, Jason Moseley (Paris), East Dublin, GA and a nephew, David Thompson of Washington State.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Saturday, February 18, 2023 from the graveside in the Glenn J. Thompson Cemetery, Ailey, Georgia with Pastor Owen Waters officiating.  Mr. Thompson will be laid to rest beside his wife.

His family will receive friends on Saturday, at the gravesite, from 1:00 pm until the hour of service or friends and family may call at the residence.
