Mrs. Laura Jean Nielsen Cummings, age 63, beloved wife of James Michael Cummings of Soperton passed away on Friday morning, May 1, 2026 at her home.

Born in Norfolk, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence Brooks Nielsen and Dorothy Jean Smith Nielsen.  Laura grew up in Henderson, North Carolina where she was a graduate of Vance Senior High School in Henderson.  After high school she attended Vance Granville Community College in Henderson where she obtained her degree in Early Childhood Development.  After college she worked in children's day care as well as Pre K in Henderson, before locating to Austell, Georgia in 2001, where she continued working in childhood development for approximately twenty years.  She moved to Soperton in 2016 and married James Michael Cummings in 2022.  Most recently, Laura had worked for Walmart at the Swainsboro store.

She enjoyed crocheting, fishing and listening to gospel and country music.

Laura had attended the Soperton First Baptist Church where she sang in the adult choir.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her first husband, Mario Garcia, who passed away in 2011 and her first born child, Christopher Nielsen.

Laura leaves behind, her husband, James Michael Cummings, Soperton, GA, children, Mario Garcia Jr. (Lynne), Silver Springs, MD, Jennifer L. Watkins (Kyle), Stockbridge, GA,  Emily Cummings and Jody Cummings of Hiram, GA, siblings, Lawrence Nielsen Jr., Macon, GA, Christine Jones, Virginia Beach, VA, grandchildren, Christopher, Mario II, Marleigh and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 pm on Saturday, May 9, 2026 in the Billy Williams Chapel of Sammons Funeral Home with Pastor Chad Cofield officiating.

Her family will receive friends on Saturday, at the funeral home, from 2:00 o'clock p. m. until the hour of service.
