Mr. Leland Ely, age 82, beloved husband of the late Sara Braddy Ely, passed away on Thursday afternoon, December 31, 2020 at University Hospital in Augusta, Georgia.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Soperton; the youngest of seven children born to the late Henry Lee and Lillie Mae Johnson Ely. Mr. Ely grew up in Soperton and was a graduate of Treutlen County High School, Class of 1957 where he was the class President and Valedictorian. He began a long career in accounting; working at the Soperton Fertilizer and Guano Company for the Hall family. He worked as an Accountant and Tax Preparer with Ernest Jones & Associates in Dublin for forty years and with McClain, Calhoun, McCullough and Clark in Vidalia since 2012.

Mr. Ely and his siblings grew up attending Blackville Church of God. He later attended Emmanuel Church of the Nazarene in Adrian, the Soperton Church of God and was presently a member at St. Mark Church of the Nazarene. Mr. Ely was a lifelong Sunday School teacher.

He enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening.

His wife of forty nine years, Sara Braddy Ely passed away in 2015. He is also preceded in death by siblings, Ruby Cannady, Barnett Ely, H. B. Ely, Jimmy Ely and Doris Thigpen.

Mr. Ely leaves behind his son, Brian Ely (Joanne), Lincolnton, GA, his daughter, Susan Padgett (Jim), Evans, GA, his only living brother, James Ely, Soperton, GA, four grandchildren, Kaylee Braddy, Hannah Padgett, Jake Padgett (Anna), Colton Ely and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 pm on Sunday, January 3, 2021 in the Williams Chapel of Sammons Funeral Home with Reverends Tim Hicks and Randy Smith officiating.

Mr. Ely will be laid to rest beside his wife in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Wrightsville, Georgia.

Friends may call at the family home in Soperton after mid afternoon on Saturday, at the funeral home on Sunday from 1:30 pm until the hour of the service and back at the family home following the services.

Serving as pallbearers will be: Wes Brantley, Stacey Westberry, Rohn Barnhill, Mark Bryngleson, Vince Eubanks and Grayson Givens.
