Menza Greenway
Johnson
Apr 4, 1930 — May 16, 2024
Buford
Doris Menza Greenway Johnson, age 94, formerly of Treutlen County passed away Thursday morning, May 16, 2024 at the home of her daughter in Buford, Georgia where she had resided since 2019.
Born in the Orianna Community, she is the youngest and last living child born to the late John W. Greenway and Trudie M. Tharpe Greenway. She was a graduate of Soperton High School. She married in 1948 and relocated to Dublin where she began a 37 year career in the banking industry. She began with the Citizens and Southern (C&S ) Bank in Dublin. After her children left home she transferred to Atlanta and continued her work as the bank transitioned to Nations Bank and then Bank of America. Not content with being retired, she tried a variety of places before settling as a PBX Operator with Gwinnett Medical Center where she remained for an additional 20 years.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her siblings: Essie Browning of Macon, Clyde Greenway (and Marian of Atlanta), Thurmond Greenway (and Ezra of Savannah), Johnnie Blisset (and Calvin of Savannah), Dessie Youngblood (and Gaston of Orianna), Wilhelmina Floyd (and James of Jesup).
She leaves behind her children: Deborah Johnson of Buford, Jeff Johnson (and Debra of Homer), grandchildren, Jeremiah Johnson (and Ashley of Acworth), Elizabeth Johnson of Atlanta, great grandchildren, Eliza, Genevieve, Juliette, and three nephews, David, Billy and Greg Greenway of Atlanta.
She often told others "Don't ever quit!" Even after retiring again at 86, she often threatened to go back to work because of signs everywhere that read "Good Help Wanted". In addition to the strong work ethic that she learned from her farming dad and general store mom, her family of origin also provided room and board to teachers where she learned to value education. As a result she started school 1 year early. She liked music, mostly country, but other kinds too. Elvis was one of her all-time favorites. As for travel destinations, she enjoyed going to Las Vegas for the entertainment, not the gambling, not a penny! Her other favorite was Hawaii, three times! In her younger years she enjoyed the Georgia beaches and Daytona, FL. When she was not working, traveling, dining, or being entertained she spent as much time as she could with her grandchildren, Jeremiah and Elizabeth. She also lived to enjoy three great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 o'clock p. m. on Wednesday, May 22, 2024 in the Williams Chapel of Sammons Funeral Home, Soperton, Georgia.
