Mildred Powell Carr, age 89, Soperton native and longtime resident of Cochran passed away peacefully at the home of her son, in Dublin, on Tuesday morning, November 19, 2024.
Born in Soperton, she was the only child born to the late Wilmer Powell and Cora Lee Phillips Powell. She grew up in Treutlen County and was a graduate of Soperton High School, Class of 1952. Within a few short years, she married Eugene "Gene" Carr of Chester. The newlyweds soon moved to Athens, GA for her husband's education while she worked in the Home Economics Department at the University of Georgia. The Carr's had four sons and with her husband's work in Banking and the Farmer's Home Administration; they moved to and lived in various cities to include: Sylvester, Waynesboro, and Cochran. After settling in Cochran, she remained there for forty-seven years. Mrs. Carr had worked at Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins for over twenty-five years before retiring in 2008. She remained in Cochran until joining her son and daughter-in-law in Dublin in January of 2023. Mrs. Carr was fond of dancing, the annual Phillips Family reunions, preparing meals of fresh vegetables; which always included something fried, whether it was chicken, country fried steak, or lacy cornbread. Her passion was to be a loving and devoted mother to her four sons; of which she certainly succeeded.
She was a member of the Cochran Methodist Church where she had served as church secretary.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by former husband, Gene Carr, who passed away on October 31, 2024 and a son, Steve Carr.
She leaves behind to cherish her memories: her beloved sons, David Carr(Kathy), Dennis Carr (Cheryl), all of Suwanee, GA and Stan Carr (Angie) of Dublin, GA, siblings, Cheryl Powell, St. Augustine, FL, Billy Powell, Cochran, GA, her adored grandchildren, Katie Davidson, John Carr (Mary Rose), Will Carr (Frankie), Charlie Carr (Betsy), Abby Carr, Griffin Carr (Brittany) and Regan McShane (Ryan), Whitney Lombardi, Jake Holder (Amber Allen) and Anna Charlovich (Justin), her fourteen cherished great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 o'clock pm on Sunday, November 24, 2024 at the Boiling Springs Missionary Baptist Church, Soperton, GA with Dr. Brad Ball officiating.
Ms. Carr will be laid to rest, beside her mother, in the Boiling Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.
Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Her family will receive friends on Sunday from 1:00 o'clock p.m. until the hour of service.
