Mr. Perry Blount, age 94, of Soperton passed away peacefully in the early morning hours on Friday, July 5, 2019 at the Treutlen County Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Mr. Blount was a native of Treutlen County, having been born in the Zaidee Community to the late Perry and Mary Lou Williams Blount. He graduated from Soperton High School in 1941. In 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and qualified to enter the Navy's V-12 Officer Training Program. Upon completing the program and receiving his commission he served as a Naval Officer in the Pacific Theatre through the end of WW II.
Upon returning to the states he married Pauline Phillips and began a seventy-two year marriage until her passing in November of 2018. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1946 with a Bachelor's Degree in Agricultural Education and became a lifelong Georgia Bulldog. Mr. Blount taught Vocational Agriculture to Veterans and high school students until he joined the U.S. Postal Service in 1953, when he began a thirty-one year career as a Rural Letter Carrier on Route One in Soperton.
He had a strong faith and was active in the First Baptist Church of Soperton where he was a member of the R. A. Perry Sunday School class. He served as a Sunday School teacher, Deacon and Treasurer for decades. He was also a member of the Lions Club and American Legion.
Mr. Blount was active in the Rural Letter Carriers Association for many years, serving in several leadership positions including the President of the Georgia State Association.
He enjoyed the outdoors, especially bird hunting and fishing in his pond and the Ohoopee River. Throughout his life he maintained a strong affection and commitment to Soperton and Treutlen County.
In addition to his parents and beloved wife, he is preceded in death by two brothers, Joe Blount and Edca Blount, and three sisters, Viana West, Virginia Glisson and Linda Lovett.
Mr. Blount leaves behind his son, Phillip Blount (Gayle) Statham, GA, a brother, James Blount, Waynesboro, GA, a sister, Jane Murphy, Brenham, TX, a granddaughter, Lauren Belcher (Wesley), Jefferson, GA, a great granddaughter, Abigayle Mae Belcher, a great grandson Pearson Phillip Belcher, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 2:30 pm on Sunday, July 7, 2019 at Soperton First Baptist Church with Pastor Thomas Williams officiating.
Mr. Blount will be laid to rest beside his wife in Westview Cemetery.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Winford Smith, Steven Powell, Wesley Belcher, Brian Nalley, Donnie Cammack and Joey Pullen.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be the members of the R. A. Perry Sunday School Class.
His family will receive friends on Saturday from 6:00 - 8:00 pm in the Williams Chapel of Sammons Funeral Home.
If so desired, floral tributes are accepted or memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice.
