Mrs. Sylvia Sammons Spivey, beloved Wife and Mother and respected Author and Poet passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 13, 2022 at her home in Palm Bay, Florida.

Born in Soperton, she was the eldest of seven children born to the late Roscoe Luke and Mildred Morris Sammons.  She grew up in Soperton and was a graduate of Soperton High School, Class of 1955.  In 1957 she married Soperton native, Windel Spivey.  During the next fifty two years of their life together they moved, with her husband's career as an Air Traffic Controller with the FAA, and lived in Valdosta, Savannah and Columbus before settling in Dublin in 1970.  Mrs. Spivey was a proud wife to her husband and loving mother to not only her three children but the many others that adopted her through her involvement with her own children's school activities.  She was a substitute teacher, cheerleading coach and chaperone / medic / confidant for many school outings and trips for out of town events with the East Laurens student body and athletes.   In 1983, they relocated to Orange County, California where she was employed in residential property management until 1998.

She wrote a column for the Dublin Courier Herald for many years and became a renowned poet and published author of six books.  In 2000, her first novel was nominated as one of the best four "First Novels" by the Georgia Writers Association.  For eleven years, Sylvia's poems were printed in "The Christian Letter", a gospel pamphlet published by The Sammons Family Ministries.   In later years, she continued to enjoy literary undertakings and added antiquing (both buying and selling) as well as gardening and making jewelry.  Her husband passed away in 2009, at which time she joined her daughters in Palm Bay, Florida.

In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her only son, Antony "Tony" Spivey, a sister, Shirley Thompson and a brother, Larry Sammons.

Mrs. Spivey leaves behind, her two daughters, Tracey Martinez and Tanya Schick (Gary), all of Palm Bay, Florida, a daughter in law, Yumiko Spivey, HI, three sisters, Jerry Davis, East Dublin, GA, Miriam Mincey (William), Statesboro, GA, Merita Sammons, East Dublin, a brother, Louie Sammons (Melanie), East Dublin, GA, four grandchildren, Brandy Spivey, HI, Kyle Schick, Tucson, AZ, Aaron Martinez, Houston, TX, Kory Schick, Boynton Beach, FL and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Sunday, August 7, 2022 in the Williams Chapel of Sammons Funeral Home, Soperton, with her sister, Jerry Davis and a nephew, Daniel Spivey officiating.

Mrs. Spivey will be laid to rest between her son and husband in Westview Cemetery in Soperton.

Her family will receive friends on Sunday, at the funeral home, from 1:00 pm until the hour of service.
