Mr. Tommy Heath, age 80, beloved husband of Barbara Kight Heath of Soperton, plowed his last row and passed away peacefully on Monday evening, November 23, 2020 at Fairview Park Hospital in Dublin.
A native and lifelong resident of Treutlen County, he was the son of the late George Mathis and Alean Scott Heath. Mr. Heath grew up in Treutlen County where he attended high school and was a member of the graduating class of 1958. During his senior year of high school, he was an All State tackle under Coach Bobby Driggers and became a sought after recruit by several colleges to include Bobby Bowden in Coffee County. Mr. Heath chose to attend and play for Middle Georgia College to be close to a special young lady. In 1960 he would wed this special young lady; Treutlen County native, Barbara Kight. Mr. Tommy was a lifelong Farmer that followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfathers. He grew tobacco for 59 years, soybeans, peanuts, pine trees, cotton, Vidalia onions, pecans, hogs and other produce vegetables. In the late 1970s he was recognized as the Treutlen County Soil Conservationist of the Year, in 1984 was chosen as the Georgia Farmer of the Year, in the mid 2000s was chosen by R. J. Reynolds as the Top Tobacco Producer for the Southeastern Unites States, and in 2004 the family farm received the Georgia Farm Bureau Centennial Farm designation.
His hobby was to work and being tired never entered into his need to complete the task at hand.
Mr. Heath had attended Bethsaida Baptist Church and Trinity Assembly of God.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by brothers and sisters.
Mr. Tommy leaves behind his wife of 60 years, Barbara Heath, their children, Carman Shurling (Larry), Barnesville, GA, Alvin Heath (Glenda), Soperton, GA, Alecia Heath-Braddy (Brent), Soperton, GA, grandchildren, Summer Shurling, Kyle Shurling (Kaitlyn), Alan Shurling (Esther), Derek Heath (Amanda), Alana Waller (Cole), Tyler Heath (Sumer), Jackson Heath, Georgia Braddy, Rocco Braddy, great grandchildren, Joanna Shurling, Garrett Shurling, Allie Shurling, Brody Heath, Paxton Heath, two sisters, Julia Spivey and Geraldine Horne, both of Soperton, GA and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Friday, November 27, 2020 from the graveside at Heath Cemetery with Reverend Larry Hammock and Reverend Charles Leverett officiating. The wearing of facial coverings will be appreciated.
Friends are invited to visit with the family at the graveside on Friday following the service and are invited to pay their respects to Mr. Tommy on Friday at the funeral home from 8:00 am – 12:00 noon.
