SSG Travis O'Neal Proctor, age 77, of Hinesville, Georgia passed away on Monday morning, October 8, 2018 at the Kindred Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Born in Lawrence County, Alabama, he was the son of the late Travis Daniel Proctor and Bessie Idela Thompson.
He grew up in Alabama before enlisting in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the 173 rd Airborne Division as a Paratrooper. Shortly after enlisting, he married Sue Morrison of Soperton, and together they traveled the world over with his military assignments until returning stateside to Fort Stewart in Hinesville, Georgia. During his active duty he served in Vietnam, from where he received many awards, meritorious citations and medals of achievement. Upon retiring from active duty as a Staff Sergeant in 1983, he remained at Ft. Stewart working as a Civilian in Personnel Processing for the Finance Department of the Department of Defense until the early 1990s.
SSG Proctor was of Cherokee Native American lineage and his Native American name was "Bald Eagle." He enjoyed leatherwork, Native American beadwork, reading and watching old Westerns as well as following the Atlanta Braves. As a younger man, he enjoyed riding motorcycles as well as owning and racing a hobby class, dirt track racecar with his brother in law.
SSG Proctor is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sue Proctor, Hinesville, GA; three children: Sandra Mae "Sandy" Shelton (Elden), Trinity, AL; James Travis "Jim" Proctor (Laura), Las Vegas, NV; Stephen O'Neal Proctor (Mandy), Hinesville, GA; a sister in law and brother in law, Fay and Ben Beck, Soperton, GA; eight grandchildren: Greg Brady, Sheena Sackett (Russell), Kimberly Blackman (Kyle), Evan Daniel Proctor, Tristan James Proctor, Genesis Leigh Mitchell, Abigail Venus Proctor, Jonathon O'Neal Proctor; four great grandchildren: Ailey, Rylan, Lilah and Rylee; numerous nieces and nephews and his beloved K-9 service dog, Rebel.
Funeral services will be held in the Chapel of Sammons Funeral Home, Soperton, Georgia at 11:00 am on Thursday, October 18, 2018 with the Reverend George Grimes officiating.
SSG Proctor will be laid to rest in Westview Cemetery with full military honors.
His family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at the funeral home.
Serving as Honorary Pallbearers will be representatives of the K-9 Battle Buddies and their service dogs.
Serving as Active Pallbearers will be the U.S. Army Honor Guard.
